Twin brothers identified as suspects killed in armed robbery and shooting at Saanich bank

Investigators have identified the two suspects who were killed in an armed robbery and shooting at a Vancouver Island bank on Tuesday.

Today, the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) confirmed a number of details about the incident, which left six police officers injured.

The two deceased men involved in the incident are 22-year-old twin brothers – Mathew and Isaac Auchterlonie from Duncan.

“Investigators have spoken with their family and they are cooperating with our investigation,” said the RCMP, adding that the family has asked for privacy.

“We are looking into the suspects' backgrounds and can confirm that neither had criminal records or were known to police.”

“We understand that the release of the names of the two deceased may answer the who, but there are still many outstanding questions and investigation efforts that need to take place in order to fully understand what took place and why,” says Cpl. Alex Bérubé, VIIMCU spokesperson.

Police say the motive behind the armed robbery and exchange of gunfire with police has not yet been determined.

“We believe there could be people out that may have more information about the brothers, their recent activities and travels and we need those people to come forward and speak to police,” investigators added.

VIIMCU can also confirm that two individuals are connected with the white four-door 1992 Toyota Camry that has two black racing stripes over the hood and roof.

Since releasing the photo on Thursday of the vehicle, police have received a number of calls and tips.

About the possibility of a third suspect being involved, police said that they are continuing to investigate, but it has been determined that only two suspects entered the bank that day.

Police are dealing with hundreds of hours of video footage of the incident, along with dozens of interviews. Forensic analysis is also ongoing at the BMO.

The IIO BC is also conducting a concurrent investigation.

Anyone with recent information or interactions with the two men, or saw the Toyota Camry in the week prior to the incident along with anything else that could be related to Tuesday’s events are asked to please contact VIIMCU at 250-380-6211.
